Commonly asked questions

What is page speed?

Page Speed is a framework of many different ways to measure web page speeds. The major focus of this framework is on the visitor’s experience, which means the factors that make them stay on a site are taken into account. This way, there are a lot of different ways to look at loading speed. When your website runs slowly, it can affect how well a visitor gets around your site.

What is a “meta tag”?

A meta tag is simply an HTML or XHTML element used to provide metadata about the content on a web page, such as the title, description, keywords, and so forth. Meta tags have varied greatly over the years, but two remain important: the meta tag description and the page name.

A meta tag can appear at the top of an HTML document or within an XHTML document. Regardless of where it appears, a meta tag must be contained in a meaningful chunk of text. Meta tags are usually one or more words, but they can be one or more sentences. However, the meta description should be descriptive enough to give search engine spiders and human visitors an idea of what the website’s focus is. A good meta description should also be self-explanatory.

Some search engines allow the site owner to control the visibility of metadata. Google, for example, only allows a meta description to appear once and cannot be hidden or altered. Other search engines, like Yahoo!, allow hidden or “attenuated” metadata. This means that the description will be shown even if a user has entered something else on the search engine. In this case, the hidden attribute will be made visible to change their mind and enter something else.
